Project Overview

DP World Vancouver operates a major marine terminal at the Port of Vancouver, supporting container handling, rail connectivity, reefer operations, and continuous cargo movement.
Radiance Energy was selected to modernize lighting in operational areas where reliability, efficiency, and minimal downtime were critical. The project focused on replacing aging metal-halide fixtures while introducing controls that could reduce unnecessary energy use without disrupting terminal operations.

The Challenge

The existing lighting system relied on aging 347V metal-halide fixtures with a high failure rate.
Because the terminal operates continuously, scheduling shutdowns for lighting maintenance was difficult and expensive. The facility needed a more reliable lighting system that could reduce energy use and maintenance requirements while supporting around-the-clock operations.

The Solution

Radiance Energy replaced 100 metal-halide fixtures with 30W IP65 LED fixtures designed for demanding terminal environments.

An intelligent control system was also installed, allowing reefer tower lighting to be dimmed and activated through occupancy sensors and timers. Daylight harvesting and motion-sensor controls further reduced unnecessary operating hours and energy consumption.

Project Results

  • 96% energy savings
  • More than $37,500 in energy and maintenance savings
  • 55,000 lbs of GHG emissions reduced annually
  • 100 metal-halide fixtures replaced
  • Daylight harvesting and motion-sensor controls
  • Reduced maintenance requirements
  • 10-year warranty

Smarter Lighting for 24/7 Terminal Operations

Marine terminals operate continuously and depend on lighting systems that can perform reliably in demanding industrial environments.
At DP World Vancouver, the retrofit combined durable LED fixtures with occupancy, timer, and daylight controls to reduce unnecessary lighting use while maintaining visibility where and when it was needed.
The result was a more efficient lighting system with significantly lower energy and maintenance requirements, better suited to the operational demands of a busy container terminal.
