Key Result:
80% Lighting Energy Cost Savings
Location:
West Vancouver, BC
Project Overview
West Vancouver Schools serves communities across West Vancouver, Lions Bay, Bowen Island, and surrounding areas.
Radiance Energy conducted a detailed energy audit and lighting analysis across 20 schools and administrative buildings, identifying opportunities to reduce energy use, lower maintenance requirements, and improve lighting quality throughout the district.
The Challenge
The district was frequently replacing fluorescent lighting while energy costs remained high. Teachers were sometimes turning lights off or dimming them because students complained about the existing classroom lighting. High flicker rates, aging fluorescent fixtures, and recurring maintenance demands created both operational and learning-environment challenges.
The Solution
Radiance Energy replaced high-flicker, high-maintenance T8 and T12 fluorescent tubes with high-efficiency, ultra-low-flicker LED tubes, downlights, and area lighting.
The retrofit improved lighting quality across classrooms and other school spaces while substantially reducing energy use and maintenance requirements. Staff reported a positive response from students immediately following installation.
Project Results
80% lighting energy cost savings after the first year
Estimated 2 million kWh in energy savings
Flicker reduced from approximately 40% to less than 3%
Reduced lighting maintenance requirements
Improved classroom lighting quality
More consistent learning environments for students and staff
Better Lighting Across an Entire School District
School lighting needs to perform consistently across classrooms, libraries, corridors, administrative areas, and other shared spaces. At West Vancouver Schools, the retrofit addressed both efficiency and light quality across multiple facilities. By significantly reducing flicker and energy use, the project created a more comfortable lighting environment while lowering operating and maintenance costs across the district.
