Project Overview

Saskatoon Public Schools is Saskatchewan’s largest school division, serving nearly 29,000 students across 58 schools, including 48 elementary schools and 10 secondary schools.

Radiance Energy conducted a detailed energy audit and lighting analysis across schools and buildings in the district, identifying opportunities to reduce energy use, improve lighting quality, and lower maintenance requirements.

The Challenge

The district was frequently replacing fluorescent lighting, while energy costs remained high.
In some classrooms, teachers were turning lights off or dimming them because students complained about the quality of the existing lighting. High flicker rates, aging T8 and T12 fluorescent tubes, and ongoing maintenance demands were affecting both operating costs and the learning environment.

The Solution

Radiance Energy replaced high-flicker, high-maintenance T8 and T12 fluorescent tubes with high-efficiency, ultra-low-flicker LED tubes, downlights, and area lighting.

The retrofit improved light quality throughout classrooms and other school spaces while significantly reducing both energy consumption and maintenance requirements.

Project Results

  • 76% lighting energy cost savings after the first year
  • Flicker reduced to less than 3%
  • Reduced lighting maintenance requirements
  • Improved classroom lighting quality
  • Brighter, more consistent learning environments for students and staff

Lighting Designed for Learning

Educational lighting needs to support more than energy efficiency. Students and teachers spend long hours under artificial light, making consistency, glare, flicker, and overall visual comfort important considerations.
At Saskatoon Public Schools, the retrofit reduced operating costs while creating a more comfortable and dependable lighting environment across learning spaces.
