Calgary, ABProject Overview
Heritage Station is a large mixed-use, transit-oriented development in southwest Calgary. Westcorp describes the site as including two completed 21-storey residential towers, 715 residential units, 107,000 sq. ft. of commercial space, and nearly 2,000 parking stalls across the development.
Radiance Energy was brought in while Westcorp was already partway through a lighting upgrade in the parkade. Instead of continuing with new T5 fluorescent fixtures, Radiance proposed a more efficient LED solution designed to reduce both energy and maintenance costs.
The Challenge
The parkade contained approximately 1,700 T5 and T8 fluorescent fixtures that required frequent lamp and ballast replacement. The result was a costly maintenance cycle and unnecessary energy consumption across a large underground parking environment.
Westcorp wanted to reduce both energy and maintenance costs while improving lighting performance in a high-use parking facility.
The Solution
Radiance Energy replaced the existing fluorescent fixtures with an intelligent LED lighting system, significantly improving efficiency across the parkade. The project was implemented through Radiance’s no-upfront-cost lease program, allowing Westcorp to begin realizing energy savings without a large initial capital outlay.
Project Results
- 85% energy savings
- More than $100,000 saved annually
- 1,300 tons of GHG emissions reduced per year
- Significantly lower maintenance requirements
- Improved light output
Transforming a Large Underground Parkade
Parking structures are often ideal candidates for LED retrofits because they operate for long hours, contain large fixture counts, and can generate significant ongoing maintenance costs.
At Heritage Station, Radiance targeted a large-scale parkade where inefficient fluorescent lighting was creating both energy and maintenance pressure. By replacing the system with LED technology, the project delivered measurable operating savings while improving the lighting environment for residents, visitors, and commercial users.
