Project Overview

The Ontario East gym is part of a large indoor sports complex in Montreal serving a range of recreational and athletic activities.
Radiance Energy was selected to modernize the facility’s aging lighting system with a high-efficiency LED retrofit focused on reducing energy costs, improving lighting performance, and supporting long-term sustainability goals.

City of Montreal – Gym (Ontario East)-2

The Challenge

The existing metal-halide high-bay lighting consumed excessive energy and required frequent lamp replacement and maintenance.
Lighting coverage was also inadequate in parts of the gym, affecting visibility, usability, and safety. The facility needed a more efficient system capable of delivering brighter, more uniform illumination while lowering operating costs.

The Solution

Radiance Energy designed a modern LED retrofit using high-efficiency linear high-bay fixtures.

Existing 400W metal-halide high-bay fixtures were replaced with 178W LED fixtures, significantly reducing energy use while improving lighting quality and uniformity throughout the gym.

Rebate incentives were also incorporated into the project strategy to improve overall project economics.

Project Results

  • 64.7% energy savings
  • $27,573 projected total savings over 10 years
  • Fixture power reduced from 400W to 178W
  • Brighter, more uniform lighting
  • Improved visibility and safety
  • Reduced maintenance requirements
  • Lower CO₂ emissions and reduced fixture waste

Better Lighting for an Active Indoor Sports Environment

Gymnasiums require strong, consistent illumination across large open spaces where visibility and safety are critical.
At the Ontario East facility, the LED retrofit significantly reduced fixture wattage while improving lighting coverage and uniformity. The result was a more efficient system better suited to sports, recreation, and day-to-day facility use.
