70% Energy Savings
Location:
Calgary, AB
Project Overview
Crowfoot Arena is an ice sports facility in northwest Calgary serving hockey, skating, and community recreation. Radiance Energy was selected to modernize the arena’s aging lighting system with a high-efficiency LED solution designed to improve visibility, reduce energy consumption, and lower ongoing operating and maintenance costs.
The Challenge
The existing lighting system consumed excessive energy and required frequent maintenance. Flickering fixtures affected visibility and player comfort, while older lighting technology produced excess heat that added unnecessary load to the arena’s ice plant. The facility needed a more efficient system that could improve playing conditions while reducing operating costs.
The Solution
Radiance Energy implemented a high-performance LED lighting system designed specifically for the demands of an ice sports environment.
The new system substantially reduced energy consumption while increasing light output and eliminating flicker. Lower heat output also reduced the load placed on the ice plant, supporting more efficient overall facility operation.
Project Results
70% reduction in lighting energy use
More than 95,000 kWh saved annually
20% increase in light output
Flicker eliminated
Reduced heat load on the ice plant
Brighter, whiter ice surface with sharper rink markings
Improved puck tracking and playing conditions
Better Light. Better Ice. Lower Energy Use.
Ice arena lighting affects more than visibility. Traditional high-output fixtures can generate significant heat, increasing the cooling demand required to maintain ice conditions. At Crowfoot Arena, the LED retrofit improved illumination while lowering both lighting energy use and heat output. The result was a brighter rink, better visibility for players and spectators, and a more efficient overall facility.
